We recently supplied the equipment for a rural property who was getting their water from a borehole. It is essential to have this water treatment in place for health and safety reasons, for example the water will have contaminants in the raw water. Boreholes and wells can harbour bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause serious health issues. There can also be chemical hazards like arsenic, lead, nitrates or fluoride can also be present. It’s also important to consider that runoff from nearby agricultural activities can introduce harmful substances like nitrates and phosphates.
This water treatment system we supplied will ensure the water from the borehole is safe, clean and free from harmful contaminants, while also protecting your property’s infrastructure and family’s health.
Getting a water analysis before installing a water treatment system is crucial because it ensures the treatment system is tailored to address the specific issues in your water supply.
When receiving the water report we had high levels of the following to contend with.
- Turbidity
- Iron
- Manganese
Treating this water from the borehole for this domestic property in a rural location involves a series of steps to ensure the water is sage and palatable.
Here’s what we supplied for this:
13×54 Filter AG+ Unit, to reduce the turbidity to within PCV.
Reducing the turbidity to within Permissible Concentration Values (PCV) in water treatment is essential for several reasons:
- Improved aesthetic quality: High turbidity can make water appear murky or cloudy.
- Pathogen removal: Turbidity can shield microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and parasites.
- Enhanced Filtration Efficiency: Suspended particles in turbid water can clog filters and reduce their effectiveness. Lower turbidity helps maintain filter performance and longevity.
- Compliance with Regulatory Standards: Many water quality standards, such as those set by the WHO, EPA or local authorities, specify permissible turbidity limits. Meeting these standards ensures compliance and protects public health.
- Prevention of Chemical Interference: Turbidity can interfere with the effectiveness of coagulants, disinfectants, and other treatment chemicals, leading to suboptimal water treatment.
- Reduction of Contaminant Load: Turbidity is often associated with other organic matter, heavy metals, or other contaminants that may pose health risks. Reducing turbidity also reduces the load of these associated contaminants.
By maintaining turbidity within the PCV, water treatment facilities ensure safe, clean and reliable water.
- 14×65 Pyrolox Unit, to reduce the iron level.
It’s important to remove iron in water as it can cause rust-coloured stains on sinks, toilets, bathtubs, and laundry. These stains are difficult to remove and can damage surfaces over time. Having high iron levels in water can also give it a metallic taste and can cause an unpleasant smell. This making it less desirable to use for cooking or drinking. That’s why its important that we supplied this pyrolox unit to this home, so the water used throughout it is safe, drinkable and protects the plumbing and appliances around the home.
- 14×65 Simplex Ecomix Unit, to reduce the iron and manganese to within PCV
- CE Valves and MAVS (motorised alternating valves) to facilitate clean water backwash/regeneration, along with enabling NHWB valves to be used.
- 1 of Storage Tank
- 1 of LB5-203 Ultraviolet Disinfection Unit, complete with 5-micron pre-filtration.
There are key reasons to why UV’s are used in water treatment systems due to their effectiveness, efficiency and eco-friendly nature. The main reason is that UV light is highly effective at inactivating bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens by damaging their DNA or RNA, preventing them from reproducing. The reason the UV is always placed last in the water treatment application is because UV systems are most effective when the water is clear and free of turbidity or particles, as these can block or scatter the UV light, reducing its effectiveness. Therefore, the pretreatment we selected is necessary to ensure the UV works correctly and that overall and the water is safe to use throughout this home.
