Tailored Borehole Water Treatment Solution for a Brewery

Borehole BreweryBorehole Water Treatment

A growing craft brewery in the UK faced challenges with their borehole water supply, which continued high levels of calcium, magnesium and manganese. While the water source was abundant, its mineral content posed risks to the brewing process, affecting the taste, consistency and quality of their beer. To ensure high-quality brewing water, the brewery worked with us and our dealer to create a customised solution.

Challenges:

When receiving the water report from the customer. The borehole water exhibited:

  • High Calcium and Manganese levels: Causing scaling in brewing equipment and impacting the flavour of the beer.
  • Elevated Manganese: Leading to potential discolouration and off-flavours in final product.
  • Microbial Contaminants: Requiring sterilization to meet brewing industry standards.

The brewing needed a system that could efficiently treat their borehole water while maintaining a consistent water profile for brewing.

J&F Water Treatment designed a three-stage water treatment system tailored to the brewery’s needs.

We supplied an Ecomix filtration system, a multifunctional media that effectively removed:

  • Excess Calcium and Magnesium – Preventing scaling in brewing equipment.
  • Manganese – Ensuring water clarity and avoiding off flavours.
  • Other impurities – Reducing iron and tannins for improved water quality.

Ecomix provided a low-maintenance and cost-effective solution, ensuring the water met brewing standards for further application.

To achieve optimal water quality, the brewery required a MO24000 Reverse Osmosis System (RO) system which:

  • Removed up to 99% of dissolved solids, ensuring water consistency.
  • Provided low-TDS water, giving brewers complete control over mineral additions.
  • Improved flavour stability and batch-to-batch consistency.

The MO24000’s high-efficiency design ensured reliable operation while minimizing wastewater, keeping sustainability in mind.

As a final safeguard we always like to include a Luminor UV sterilization for microbial safety. Having this UV placed last eliminates bacteria and viruses, ensuring microbiologically safe water for brewing. UV treatment provided a chemical-free solution to meet industry hygiene requirements without affecting taste of composition.

Results and Impact:

1. Consistent Water Quality: The brewery achieved a stable water profile, essential for producing high-quality beer.

2. Improved Equipment Lifespan: Reduced scaling and maintenance costs for kettles, boilers and fermenters.

3. Enhanced Product Consistency: The treated water allowed the brewery to maintain consistent taste and quality across batches.

4. Sustainable & Cost-Effective: The system optimized water usage, reducing reliance on external water sources.

By implementing a customized water treatment system featuring Ecomix, MO24000 Reverse Osmosis System, and UV unit, J&F Water Treatment successfully addressed the brewery’s borehole water challenges. This project highlights our expertise in providing tailored solutions for breweries, ensuring both water quality and brewing excellence.
